It all comes down to this. Man of Steel separated audiences and Batman V Superman was universally roundhouse kicked to the curb. There was a shining ray of hope that was Wonder Woman, but is Justice League enough to win over an audience?
Does the introduction of Cyborg, The Flash and Aquaman help keep the franchise afloat? Or does it fail to do justice to the much loved comic universe? Movie goers want to like the DC films, and Warner Brothers know it. After gaining some trust with the success of Wonder Woman, Justice League needed to be the icing on the cake.
After script rewrites, re-shoots and two directors. DC have pieced together another film that managed to split audiences right down the middle. Being the most light hearted film of the “Dark” DCEU, some film goers found it entertaining, while others viewed it as cheap CGI trash. The film didn’t take itself too seriously and even had plenty of laughs: Batman not afraid to admit his super power was being rich, and throwing some shade at Aquaman for talking to fish.
Warner Bros. short term plans
As stated before, Justice League has been relatively well received. At the time of writing it is sitting at a comfortable 7.3 on IMDB. The film is also almost breaking even on its huge budget and will most likely surpass it. This means that Warner Brothers can safely move onto their second phase. The upcoming DC movies can expect to hit our screens between 2018 and 2020.
Jason Momoa made a splash on screen in the recently released Justice League film (not including post credits BvS). Before getting his feet wet, shooting had already started for his own staring film.
Aquaman’s cast includes the likes of Patrick Wilson playing Arthur Curry’s half-brother, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as his nemesis Black Manta. Not to mention the likes of Nicole Kidman, and Dolph Lundgren. The film is set to take place after the events of Justice League and will no doubt involve our dreadlocked sunken king defending his throne.
Zachary Levi was cast as the titular character Billy Batson (Shazam) in October this year. Asher Angel cast as the “kid version” shortly after. Shazam promises to be a fun and upbeat film and original in many ways. Given the fact that Billy’s superpowers involve the young boy yelling SHAZAM and turning into an adult with the powers of flight and superhuman strength.
Wonder Woman 2 (2019)
Arguably the best DC film yet, Wonder Woman is screaming out for a sequel. The gorgeous and talented Gal Gadot has signed on for a second film and Patty Jenkins will return as director on the project.
Wonder Woman was widely well received and fans will no doubt expect a great follow up. While it is unknown if any other DC heroes will turn up in the sequel, you could expect one or two to show up assuming it is set in the modern DC era.
If you thought Cyborg’s introduction to the DC franchise would skip out on his story, you were wrong. Ray Fisher will return to his role as the cyborg/human hybrid in his solo film. The film will focus more on Cyborg’s character and will not be bringing back any of the league to join him.
Green Lantern Corps (2020)
Some DC fans may have been excited to see a green lantern appear in a flash back sequence of Justice League (myself for one). Putting aside the trash that was Green Lantern (2011) it’s safe to say Ryan Reynolds will not reprise his role as Hal Jordan.
It is unclear whether the film will revolve around the Galactic Police, or if it will feature newer heroes such as Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz. As no cast has been announced plans are most likely still being put in place for the final announced film.
What happened to Flash? Currently undated Warner Bros. will get to him as well as several others in the long run. Did someone say Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam?
So there you have it, the upcoming DC movies planned for our near future. Warner will not be deterred by the two sidedness of Justice League and proceed to roll out with their next film plans. So if you are still on the fence about the DC Extended Universe maybe Warner Bros. cramming it down your throats will help? Then again maybe not.
