Obi-Wan Kenobi Film

The classic Star Wars character Obi-Wan Kenobi is likely to get a solo film, and these are a few key plot points that ought to be worked out.

Quite a few fellow Star Wars fans might disagree with me when I say I think the franchise is on its last legs. Sure, no one will live to see the FINAL Star Wars film, but each year a new one is coming to a theater near you.

Instead of releasing a Star Wars film every three years as with the first two trilogies, we now have a brand new Star Wars movie coming out each year. I think this practice will actually drive the saga into the dirt sooner than it should. I believe it will use up fresh ideas a lot quicker.

With high expectations in anticipation of Ron Howard’s Han Solo film, there has also been someĀ discussionĀ of an Obi-Wan Kenobi Film in addition to comical discourse about future solo features on characters such as Jabba the Hutt and Jar Jar Binks. (What would be super cool to see is a whole movie on the mysterious Master Yoda.)

I think a movie about one of the most prominent, active Jedi masters would be cool. Besides, Ben’s always been my favourite character. But for it to be as amazing as I would hope it to be, the script writers and director are going to have to sew a pretty solid and smooth plot.

Here’s what we know. The movie would be a stand-alone Star Wars spin-off like Rogue One or the Han Solo picture, and British actor Ewan McGregor who previously portrayed Kenobi in the prequel trilogy is quite willing to pick up the Jedi’s character once again.

1 – New Material That Ties in with the Other Films

The main problem I see in doing an Obi-Wan Kenobi film is that so many stages of his life are already very well chronicled in Star Wars Episodes I-VI, from the young padawan to his death from his own old padawan and beyond.

So the movie would do well to cover completely new material, like an adventure he had in his padawan or golden Jedi years which is not revealed in any of the other movies. The plot might even find some inspiration from Star Wars novels, such as John Jackson Miller’s Kenobi.

2 – Where Kenobi Came From

For the mainstream audience of the Star Wars universe, an origin story could be very successful and very effective. All strong characters should have a bit of backstory, a history. It would be nice if the movie were to answer questions like “Who were Obi-Wan’s parents?”, “How did he wind up a padawan?”, and “What kind of emotions were boiling in young Obi-Wan when he left his family?”

3 – A Friendship with Qui-Gon Jinn

Lastly, if Hollywood is going to create a movie on Obi-Wan Kenobi then it is only right to at least mention his early Jedi master and friend Qui-Gon Jinn. Many fans were disappointed at the fact that both Qui-Gon Jinn and Darth Maul were short-lived characters.

Despite Liam Neeson wanting to stop acting in action films, it would definitely be cool to see Obi-Wan’s introduction to Qui-Gon or perhaps even Obi-Wan contacting Qui-Gon after his death.
