The Netflix series of The Punisher is hitting the small screen. If there is a day to be a superhero nerd, November 17th is the day.
It has been a long time coming for one of Marvel’s favourite anti-heroes. He’s had a bit of a tough run, with the highest rating for a live-action Punisher movie being a mediocre 6.5/10 on iMDB.
But that was all due to change when The Punisher arrived on Marvel Netflix’s Daredevil season two. Portrayed by Jon Bernthal, (The Accountant, Fury, The Walking Dead) this character quickly stole the show. Bernthal threw himself into the role, and the results paid off, with many fans instantly demanding The Punisher have his own titular show. It was never supposed to, as Marvel and Netflix only signed a deal for Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders, way back in 2013. Later, The Punisher was added in.
So, what is Netflix’s The Punisher all about?
We already saw what The Punisher could do when he took on an entire jail cell block of inmates. This series is going to follow the broken yet resilient alter ego of The Punisher, Frank Castle, in his mission to get justice for his murdered wife and two children, and follow a scheme far beyond that of the New York City crime gangs he was originally focused on
Using an expert skill set, he blurs the lines of morality and justice in his crusade for punishing those who wronged him.
Why should YOU be so hyped for Netflix’s The Punisher?
Well if you’ve seen Daredevil season two, that should be all the answers you need. But that’s not all. Every Marvel movie or TV show so far has involved, to some degree, superpowers or advanced tech. Punisher stays grounded, and instead focuses on the ex-marine that knows nothing more than bullets and rebellion.
There’s a whole new cast, including the return of old characters in other Marvel Netflix shows. We’ve got the return of Deborah Ann Woll (True Blood, Catch .44) playing Karen Page, another fan favourite of Daredevil. Punishers sidekick, Microchip, played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Lake House, Girls, Come Out and Play) will be making an appearance. He builds weapons and supply’s tech and friendship. However more recently in the comics, Microchip has gradually evolved from The Punisher’s friend to an enemy. He has been mentioned briefly in ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D as well.
Aside from the fact everyone wants to see the return of a human machine who completely destroyed an entire cell block with his fists, this series is set to be as mental as it is physical. Its not just a deranged lunatic shooting up half of New York, its a man who is still coming to terms with the loss of his family. A man, who will do anything to get them justice, and get himself revenge.
So, just in case none of the above made sense, on November 17th: You shall take the day off work, off school, be responsibility free, and you shall sit down and binge watch this entire series. Should you not have Netflix, you will buy a Netflix subscription, and then watch. You will not watch Justice League, you will not play Star Wars: Battlefront, until you have watched this series.
Ladies and Gentlemen, introducing to you, The Punisher.
