We’re here to tell you everything you need to know before watching The Fate of the Furious, and why it will change the franchise.
With Fast and Furious 8 set for release in Australian cinemas on April 12th, fans are ridiculously excited for what is in store for them. Furious 7 was one of the highest grossing films of all time, but a lot is set to change for Furious 8. The hype is well justified and Fast and Furious 8 could be one for the record books. With so many films in the franchise to keep track of, where here to get you ready for one of the most anticipated movies of 2017. We’ve got your back!
1) Fast and Furious 8 will be the start of a new trilogy that will end the franchise
That’s right, you heard correctly. There will be an 8, 9 and 10 . The Fast and Furious franchise has been been getting more interesting with each instalment. One thing they do really well is develop their storyline and characters over the years to stay relevant. Only in the last few instalments have we seen the franchise take a different direction from just being an underground car racing action film. With the addition of some big names, I reckon we can expect the franchise to go in some really exciting directions.
2) The Fate of the Furious 8 features Charlize Theron as the main Villain.
Director Felix Gary Grey has been looking to add a fiercely badass and irresistible female villain to the franchise. And what better actor for the role than Mad Max star, Charlize Theron?
What’s her character in the movie, I hear you ask? Well, she has been cast as the main villain, Cipher. And based on what we know about her, it will be a game changer. Cipher brings a much needed uniqueness and depth to the Furious franchise that has not been seen in previous films. Previous villains have been pretty one dimensional and boring, not offering much except for your stereotypical bad guy. Cipher, on the other hand, has genuinely human and sympathetic qualities that make her a far more interesting villain.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Furious 8 composer Brian Tyler explains to fans why Charlize Theron’s Cipher is such an exciting villain:
“There’s no question the havoc and villainy she brings [but] you’re attracted to it. There’s something where you can kind of see yourself in this villain that makes it more disturbing and, at the same time, more interesting. It’s the sympathetic villains, in a way, who really get under your skin. In a much different way, but like how Anthony Hopkins did Hannibal Lecter, where you like him, but you’re like, ‘Wait, why am I doing that? I shouldn’t be rooting for this person.’ She has that ability to do that. She’s just a fantastic actor.”
3) The Fate of the Furious builds on Kurt Russell’s character as Mr Nobody.
Fast and Furious 7 would have been the start of a new trilogy with a different ending – but that’s where Kurt Russell comes in. He was set up as a bit of mystery, left to be explored in Furious 8.
Vin Diesel has stated that this mysterious government agent would play a major role in the events of the film. We love Paul Walker but reckon Mr Nobody will play an exciting leadership role in the upcoming film.
What we know about this character so far is that he is a pretty friendly, easy going dude. In fact I’d love to have a beer with him. Although we’re hoping The Fate of the Furious 8 will reveal a whole lot more about Mr Nobody. It’s safe to say he’ll probably be in charge of some action packed missions requiring the badass Dom and his family to fuck shit up.
4) Furious 8 will no longer just be set in Los Angeles.
The locations have been equally as important to The Fast and Furious franchise as the storyline and characters. It has always been set in Los Angeles so it’s pretty interesting that the writers decided to change things up, landing on New York.
But I reckon New York City will be a killer setting for the movie. There’s so much cool urban scenery to destroy in New York and i can’t wait for some serious road rage. Seriously though, New York’s traffic is just the worst.
We can also expect to see some action in Cuba (mmmm exotic) and even Iceland. The Rock has made a point to call himself the Iceman for this film. That sets the bar pretty height!
5) Dwayne Johnson is back as Luke Hobbs in The Fate of the Furious, but he’s not the same.
Luke Hobbs took a break in Furious 7, only appearing a few scenes. Johnson has said that if he were to appear in another Fast and Furious film (which he is, don’t worry), it would have to be for a better reason than to say funny shit and then kill people. Fast and Furious 7 briefly showed the family man behind the killing machine, which brought a much needed change. Fast and Furious 8 will continue to add more depth to Luke Hobbs in a whole different.
The Rock posted on his Instagram:
“When you strip a man of all he has. All that’s important to him. You force him to return to his roots.. and sometimes that’s a very dangerous and twisted place,” Dwayne Johnson captions the snap. “If I was going to return for another FAST & FURIOUS I wanted to come in and disrupt the franchise in a cool way that got fans fired up and their blood pumping to see a new version of Hobbs.”
So there you have it, 5 things you need to know before seeing Fast and the Furious 8. The wait is nearly over and I’m sure it will be a game changer. These movies never get old!
