Fans have been wondering if James Gunn will take the helm as the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 director, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 isn’t even out yet!
Well, that question has been answered.
James Gunn achieved a remarkable feat in 2014 when he took some relatively obscure (guardians fans please don’t blast me) comic book characters and turned them into one of the best comic book movies to hit our screens.
And that’s not to mention that he also managed to bring some of the top and well known Hollywood talent to the franchise including Chris Pratt, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel and Zoe Saldana, as well as some diamonds in the rough such as Dave Bautista and Karen Gillan. There were even some cameos from Nathan Fillian, Benicio Del Toro and Michael Rooker. Which makes this an incredible gamble on a relatively unknown (commercially) comic book series.
Plus, the soundtrack, oh my gosh. Didn’t it just make the movie? From the moment Star Lord flicks on his Sony Walkman and started booting those rat things around whilst miming to Come and Get Your Love by Redbone this movie killed it with awesome music. It’s got to be the most Spotified movie playlist ever – someone in then know come back to me and confirm that please.
James Gunn had already been confirmed for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, but fans knew that if he was the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 director that this genius talent acquisition process would continue. This has already started with Kurt Russel continuing his foray back into the movie world by playing Star Lord’s Father, although it seems like he might be also playing a planet. Confusing… but The Wrap have explored this for you.
Thankfully Mr Gunn himself confirmed the news on his Facebook page that he would be the Guardian of the Galaxy Vol 3 director:
Awesome news huh?
James Gunn has also revealed that the movie will take place after the events of The Avengers: Infinity War. My mind is blown. Mainly because I can’t even begin to conceive how the franchise will get there.
This will mean that there are accurately 13 bajillion movies to come out before then to lay the groundwork here, and that in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 there might well be some cross-over. Particularly as Thanos has been a common enemy of pretty much everything that has worn a cape or lycra, and this includes Green Lantern – “shudder”.
I have listed out the proposed movie release times for anything based loosely around Guardians of the Galaxy 3 below. Just in case you’re interested.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 release date: May 5, 2017
Spider-Man: Homecoming release date: Jul 7, 2017
Thor: Ragnarok release date: Nov 3, 2017
Black Panther release date: Feb 16, 2018
The Avengers: Infinity War release date: May 4, 2018

Marvel are dominating the box office, and with the above this will definitely continue – especially if they can get some more of the Guardians of the Galaxy vibe into more of their movies.
