Nothing makes GoT creators happy like axing our favourite characters. Well, here are five Game of Thrones deaths fans are still upset about.

And by fans, I mean me.

With the seventh season of Game of Thrones set to be released in a month, I feel as if it’s time to remind everyone how cruel this show is. Because you know, there aren’t that many more characters who can still get the chop by this time in the series.

Now don’t get me wrong, some characters definitely deserved to die (Ramsay on my mind). But for others, it was just unbelievable to think that author George R R Martin, and later, writers David Benioff and Dan Weiss, would kill off our beloved characters.

And that is why I present to you a list Game of Thrones deaths I’m still furious about. BUT SERIOUSLY, SPOILERS. LOTS OF SPOILERS IF YOU’RE NOT UP TO DATE.

So to start off the list:

1 – Eddard Stark

While Ned’s death wasn’t the first in the series, it was the first death which really got the message across that no one is safe. With season one ending almost six years ago, it’d be easy to forget the circumstances in which Ned get the chop… so allow me to give you a brief recap!

Ned was politicked into confessing that his attempted coup d’état was all a sham, just so that he could get into power. In return for his public confession, he would be allowed to take ‘The Black’, and join the Night’s Watch, where he could have met up with Jon, and Jon could have finally learnt about his mother.

But no. Bloody Joffrey and his bloody golden, inbred locks, decided to be merciful. THAT WASN’T MERCY, THAT WAS CRUEL AND HORRIBLE AND I HOPE THAT YOU BURN IN ANY AND ALL OF THE SEVEN HELLS, YOU CRUEL ASS.  NOTHING PLEASES ME MORE THAN TO KNOW THAT IN YOUR FINAL MOMENTS YOU DECIDED TO COSPLAY AS VIOLET BEAUREGARDE FROM CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY.

Anywho…

2 – Oberyn Martell

Introduced in season four, actor Pedro Pascal brought such presence and charisma to the role, and along with his sexy accent, it became so easy to like him. More importantly, his pure hatred for anything Lannister related was so rejuvenating, especially when we get to see him roast Tywin’s pride at each and every turn (enjoy the double entendre).

In any case, while he appears harsh and coarse, we find that underneath his viperish skin all he desires is justice. He wants to see the men responsible for killing his sister and his niblings (terminology for nephews and nieces), punished for their crimes, while toppling a Mountain along the way.

And just as he’s about to get the confession that he’s been searching for, he’s murdered (I know it happened in a trial by combat, but Oberyn clearly won, and that was a dog move on Gregor’s part).

Well isn’t that a piece of eye-gouging, head blowing irony?

3 – Ygritte

I’m watching season three of GoT at the moment, and while some of Ygritte’s dialogue is kind of weird, I can’t help but think I’m in love. But then again, so is everyone else.

Ygritte is the beautiful red head who doesn’t take anyone’s shit and doesn’t see why women should be so inferior to men (I’m also describing my girlfriend but that’s beside the point). And by R’hllor she is one of the most well developed, funny, and brave characters in this series.

Her love for Jon Snow is pure, and even though she and Jon are on opposite sides of battle, you still want them to run off together, leaving everything behind. And that’s a testament to the real-life chemistry that Kit Harrington and Rose Leslie had on and off screen.

So I think you’ll all agree with me when I say, FUCK YOU OLLY, YOU SON OF A BITCH, SHE SMILED AT JON! SHE WASN’T GOING TO KILL HIM. FUCK YOU AND YOUR BLOODY NOD.

As angry as I am right now, I present to you a clip that is both hysterical and unnecessarily heartbreaking.

4 – All of the Direwolves

Do I need say more? Well yes, that’s why we’re here.

Of the six direwolves we started with, Grey Wind, Lady, Nymeria, Summer, Shaggydog and Ghost, only two are still around. But then again, they don’t receive any time on screen because, you know, the dragons take up the entire CGI budget for mythical creatures. And let’s be real, if Ghost was in the Battle of the Bastards, his death would be one too many.

Regardless, any direwolf death is uncalled for and too much for my heart to Mormont (I really hope you guys get that one).

Lady didn’t deserve to die by Ned’s hand, Grey Wind didn’t deserve to be decapitated and sewed onto Robb’s body, Shaggydog didn’t deserve to be brazenly thrown before Bolton’s Bastard, but at least Summer had a noble and symbolic death trying to protect Bran.

Shut up, I’m not crying, you’re crying!

5 – Hodor

Before I present my final point, here’s my favourite early release excerpt for the Winds of Winter:

Hodor. Source: Pintrest.

Hodor is the most peaceful character in this bloody series. What makes things even more tragic is that his entire life’s purpose was to wait for Bran to grow up, all the while being mocked and teased by the children of Winterfell, then to finally carry Bran’s pitiful ass for seasons on end, amalgamating to the scene where everyone depends on him to ‘HOLD THE DOOR’.

Okay, someone hold my ale, I need to rant for a bit.

What has me most pissed off most about Hodor’s death isn’t because he was killed by Whites. What has me in outrage is the fact that Hodor didn’t choose to sacrifice himself.

Bran, somehow traversing time and space in a still unclear manner essentially made Hodor his slave! He took away Wyllis’ free will, and transformed him into a being whose life’s purpose was to save Bran from Whites.

Where is Bran’s sacrifice? For a member of the Stark family who are all supposedly cloaked in honour and being held up to the highest ethics in the realm, he doesn’t really seem phased by the fact that he brazenly sacrificed Hodor as a pawn in the Game of Thrones.

Rant over.
